A gryphon is a mythical creature, with slightly different stories and descriptions from many ancient cultures around the world. In some he is a savior, in some a healer, and in some a bit of a warrior. I knew none of this when I set out to draw one to celebrate the birth of my grandson of that name! So first I researched the myths, decided which appearance I best liked, and then accessed more Pixabay reference photos than ever before for one drawing. I needed a lion in climbing position, an eagle preparing to catch something with its claws, another with the correct curl of wing, and one with the head looking in the right direction with the expression I was looking for. It was a great challenge for me but also great fun, and it was a wonderful way to spend my time while I awaited his birth!
I LOVE BEAUTIFUL THINGS... AND CREATIVITY OF ANY KIND I have always so admired creative, imaginative people. But, I have also always been afraid to try to join them. I have never had an art lesson, but have been very fortunate to be on sites where amazing artists share some of the things they've learned and even make suggestions or praises to novices like I was. Wow Kathy! What an amazing story behind this wonderful and very special work of art! No doubt he has it hanging in his room! So incredibly awesome and thoughtful of you, such a lucky family to have you in it. You always make me feel that way!! And it is true!

Thanks so much Sharon! The funny thing is his father, my son, started to ask if he could change his name starting at about age 6. Hahaha! The first name I recall him wanting was Bobcat. Over the years. there were several requests. Eventually, our response became "If you want to... when you turn 18!" Th last requested name was Gryphon, so when he sent us the sonogram picture letting us know he was expecting a son, I guessed to myself that this would be the name he would try to convince his wife that they should choose. So even before he revealed the name they had chosen, I began looking for my references. By the time I had found them all, I knew I would draw it either way as a gift for my son. It was so exciting when it really was the name they chose. :)
